Removing Mould Inside Your Windows
Removing Mould Inside Your Windows
Mould appears on the inside of our windows, both on the frames and around the walls. There are a number of ways in which you can help to prevent this from happening, but if it is too late, there are also a number of ways in which you can clear it away.
Why Do We Get Mould?
Mould on the inside of your windows (and around the frames) forms usually due to condensation. This condensation is from when warm air inside the home hits the cold surface of the window. This moisture meets with mould spores in the air to settle and rapidly grow, spreading until they are stopped.
Other sources of moisture inside windows can include steam from baths and showers, or in the kitchen from cooking without appropriate ventilation.
How To Prevent Mould
There are a number of things that we can do to help prevent the growth of mould inside our windows. Some of them are simple things to remember to do, others might require a little more input.
Increase ventilation – Increasing ventilation in a room can help to reduce the build-up or potential for condensation. Ventilation can help to dry out the room. Consider opening windows, even if it is just a small amount.
Use fans – In the bathroom and kitchen where there is an increased amount of steam, remember to use fans. When having a bath or shower, ensure that fans are on. And the same when cooking.
Wipe clean – If you see condensation starting to appear on windows or frames, dry this off where possible. Catching this early can help to reduce the risk of continued moisture.
Frequent cleaning – keeping on top of frequent cleaning inside of your windows can help to remove any spores that have started to settle on the surface.
Cleaning Away Mould
There are a number of commercial cleaning products available that advertise the removal of mould. However, as with standard cleaning, there is no need to invest in these products, at least until you have attempted home cleaning.
A simple yet effective 5 stage cleaning to remove mould is as follows. (Please remember that wearing PPE is advised as mould can be detrimental to your health).
- Fill a bucket with water and washing up liquid
- Dip a rag into the soapy water and wipe. Don’t brush the mould around as this will cause it to spread.
- Once removed, use the dry rag to wipe the damp area of the wall and remove any moisture.
- Throw both rags away.
- Wipe down or hoover the surface where the mould had been.
Where mould has been left for long periods of time, you may find staining which will require more abrasive cleaning. Please take precautions if this is the case.
